Why do you offer some services for free?
We believe in promoting UNIX and the Internet and helping those who wish to
learn. And while the project is owned and operated by a corporate entity,
believe it or not we're not really in it for the money. If we make enough to
cover our resource usage, we're happy. If we make more, it goes directly
to system upgrades and maintenance. We're not doing this to make a profit.
Why do you require a $1 "donation" to keep the free account from expiring?
Quite simply, to help keep spammers and wrong-doers off the system. If you're unable to make the 7 day cut-off, we'll work with you. But we absolutely DO NOT tolerate spammers or those who wish to do harm to the system.
Why do you require so much information on the signup page?
For the same reasons as the above question - to help keep out spammers and wrong-doers. These people are less likely to want to provide this information. Now, with that said, we will protect your personal information that you provide to us during the signup process.
Do you offer cPanel or some other web-based control panel?
Simply put: No. We do offer phpMyAdmin for MySQL administration over the web, but that's it. The good news is that you can very easily live without a web-based control panel. We have tutorials and documentation to help you out, and we've written custom programs to handle certain aspects of your hosting services for you (such as creating email accounts for vmail domains).
Do you donate to open source projects?
Yes! No less than 10% of earnings are ear-marked for donation. And when the year is over, what we have left after taking care of the infrastructure (hardware, network equipment, internet uplink, etc) will be added to that 10% and donated to various open source organizations which make this project possible.
Are you guys a real company?
MyUnixHost is not itself a company, but a project funded and
managed by
Desert Life Financial Group, LLC and its founder, Aaron Graves.
How about a blog?
Not officially, but occasionally our project leader Aaron Graves will post
updates on his blog.
Your website sucks!
That's not really a question, but we'll go ahead and address it anyways. True, the website design seems a bit... childish? But what were you expecting? The same stock images you see on the other webhosts' sites? We don't think that putting pictures of server racks and random people starting into space on our site really fits our personality. So yes, the website is very basic. But it serves us perfectly.
